A FOUR ton African elephant was left to slowly rot from the inside after cruel poachers shot it with a poisoned arrow. After being safely tranquillised, the medical team from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Kenyan Wildlife Service cut open a huge absess on the elephant's side, before removing dead muscle tissue and extracting the arrow. The vets then cleaned and packed the wound with green clay, a substance believed to have strong antibacterial properties. Awakening from the anaesthetic, the elephant rose from its slumber, fit enough to return to the herd.

It isn't just humans who need a spa day from time to time. Every July, elephants in the southern Indian state of Kerala are treated to ritual spa treatments at rejuvenation centres in the region. The pampered ellies at the Punnathoor Cotta Elephant Yard in Guruvayur receive hose baths, massages, and wholesome, nutritious food. The rejuvenation centre - which is attached to the famous Guruvayurappan Hindu temple - can host up to 59 elephants, and the tusked giants are happy to laze in the water while workers scrub them clean with brushes.The elephants play a key role in Kerala’s legendary temple processions and - with July considered a month of rejuvenation for humans and animals alike - these ellies are certainly not complaining.

The tables are turned on a lion as it attempts to hunt a hippo in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. After bringing down the young hippo calf, the calf’s mother returned to chase off the lion. The lions left without a meal and dented pride, the hippo appeared to not show signs of any serious injury.
